Zeynep Aktar y Sercan Yigit May Tango Festival

Zeynep Aktar & Sercan Yigit

Both in their dance and their lifestyle, as a couple Sercan and Zeynep have a distinctive point of view embracing communication and innovation, always reminding the lively, respiring “human touch” of the tango dance.

“Obviously there is a reason why they call tango dance a ‘social dance’. During our classes and performances, we never forget person to person communication and that we are at the very center of life” saying Sercan, a means to bring about the recipe of staying alive and youthful. He is a bachelor of business administration, a world citizen lived in Vien for two years, fluently speaking German and English.
Sercan has been into music since he was 15 years old. With this musical background, knowledge and experience, he can seamlessly fuse tango music into his dance. This also gives him the ability of transposing a unique musicality experience to his students during their classes.
Zeynep Aktar, on the other hand, proves how passionate she is about teaching tango by saying “…even after I became 50 years old, I would love to see my classes full of students.” She graduated from English Language and Literature, Bosphorus University.

She had been working as a corporate communication professional and professionally performing theatre for 4 years before dedicating herself to tango. She took stage many times. By means of firing up her devotion to teaching with all this know-how, Zeynep developed an exceptional style of communication with her students during class.

First Steps and Championship

Zeynep and Sercan met after a relatively short period of time since when they took their first steps to tango dance, and they decided to walk in the same path hand in hand. Along with their trainings, they spent as much time as possible exercising, experimenting, fine-tuning and intensifying their dance bit by bit, in a studio they rented daily. Consequently, they premiered the first of their success stories and won the championship at the tournament of Dance Sports Federation of Turkey (TDSF) in 2012. After this favorable result, they were sent to Lyon, France as “national candidates of Turkey” to compete in the tournament of International Dance Federation, where they won the third place. Together they demonstrate the importance of rising up embracing each other, being “one” as a couple.

Constant Innovation

Sercan and Zeynep’s dance manifests aesthetics, harmony and musicality with an intense, yet unpretentious style, where one can almost breathe the excitement surrounding their aura. After knowing them in person for a while, it will be obvious to see how harmoniously they live and dance; not only as dance partners, but also as a couple living heart by heart. Watching their videos aired on Youtube, you may see how they proceeded in years.
“The reason why tango holds us between her arms is the immense possibilities to innovate.”

Learning While Teaching

The most important difference of the duo is the dynamic approach they have adopted to their teaching method; which is vastly open to the new generation, observing the contemporary world of tango, accepting the new advancements. The trademark of Zeynep and Sercan is that they are giving classes always as a couple. As a result of this, they can teach the essence of tango dance’s reciprocating energy from both women’s and men’s points of views. Preferring to give classes to intermediate and upper levels, they embrace a dance approach based on unity.
Their sole and most important objective is to train their students as social dancers, who can dance all over the world, including Buenos Aires, with pride, not only knowing how to dance, but also with all the culture behind it. At classes, they give examples from everyday life, not enforcing strict rules, letting the student understand the very nature of tango intuitively. “We observe our students, and every student has a different way of understanding, solidifying and perfecting their dance. It is a journey.” says Sercan, “We are constantly learning while we are teaching. Tango didn’t bestowed upon us. We are making the same journey as our students. The only difference is that we are a little bit more ahead of them. We know the path and guiding them to bring them next to us, finding our campfire still fuming.”
